Why Magnesium Matters

Even though magnesium is an important nutrient for our bodies to function properly, most people actually don’t get enough of it. Suzy Cohen breaks down how magnesium matters to our health.

Research shows that magnesium is a vital nutrient for body function and overall health.  For example:

  • Keeps your heart beating at a steady and regular rate.
  • Promotes a healthy immune system.
  • Modulates the electrical activity between cells.
  • Important for creating energy in the body.

Magnesium is a factor in over 300 enzyme and metabolic reactions in the human body.

However, Americas don’t get the daily amount of magnesium recommended by the U.S. government. In fact, according to a survey, 75% of adults in the United States are magnesium-deficient.

Interestingly, the reason why this is the case is that a lot of our food is grown in poor soil. Plants absorb magnesium when growing, which we then consume in our food. Cohen notes that plants you are eating now are probably less nutritious than those consumed by your grandmother. This is because of low magnesium levels in the soil.

Besides benefitting our physical health magnesium is also important for our emotional health as well. Magnesium is an important ingredient for your body to make chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. These affect our mood and low magnesium levels can mean mood problems.

So what should we do if we need more magnesium? Cohen recommends that readers do their own research to make sure of what is appropriate for them. You can make sure that your diet includes dark and leafy greens, as well as avocados, seeds, and nuts. You can also take a magnesium supplement. The U.S. Government recommends that you get 420 milligrams of magnesium each day.
