The Benefits of DHA

Are you concerned about keeping your mind sharp as you get older? Or, do you have a child that has difficulty concentrating? According to Suzy Cohen, the solution may be DHA.

DHA is found in fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids. They have been found through research to help keep brains healthy as well as with maintaining attention. Cohen discusses how there have been studies of children and teens who struggled with reading and behavioral issues.  It was found that these children had low DHA levels. Thus, they performed poorly on assessments.

Cohen notes that the human brain is comprised of 60% fat, which is called lipophilic cells. Additionally, the cerebral cortex of the brain is made up of about 20% DHA. This is important because the cerebral cortex is responsible for several high-level functions. These include:

  • Learning language.
  • Perceiving objects.
  • Reason/comprehension.

Also, the cerebral cortex helps you when you think about picking up an object your hand does so. If this part of your brain is damaged it can have a big impact on your life. That’s why, according to Cohen, that patients who have been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are told to take fish oil.

Cohen speculates why, if DHA is so effective, why don’t doctors prescribe it? Also, why don’t doctors use DHA as a first step for treating problems such as attention issues in children?  She suspects that is because of the pharmaceutical industry.

Perhaps the most telling account of DHA’s effectiveness is a story about her own son.  When he was nine years old it was suspected that he had ADHD. Cohen considered putting her son on stimulant medication. However, she chose instead trying a fish oil supplement with a high DHA content. The supplement worked and her son did not need to take prescription medication.
