Palm kernel oil has been touted as an ointment for treating skin ailments, convulsions, and stomach problems. However, there is some debate about the validity of these claims. In Nigeria, researchers claim that microorganisms in the oil battle the infections. Cameroonian researchers on the other hand, believe that palm kernel oil actually causes skin rashes. Originally used as a traditional treatment in Nigeria, researchers in Cameroon have found that it contains Candida albicans, a type of fungus. When Candida albicans comes in contact with skin through this oil, the resulting skin rash is a form of fungal dermatitis, seemingly what was being treated for in the first place.
