Is caffeinated tea really dehydrating?

Phytonutrients naturally occurring in tea plants seem to have numerous, powerful health benefits, effective in treating ailments from genital warts to skin cancer. Recent research has even tested the abilities of antioxidant-rich green and white tea to prevent DNA damage, finding that white tea was more protective, especially the longer it was brewed. Researchers have also studied the prevalent assertion that tea is not as hydrating as plain water and acts as a diuretic, by comparing up to 6 cups of caffeinated black tea a day to water.
