How to Have a Healthy Brain

Did you know that the human brain can lose 85,000 neurons, per day? Suzy Cohen has several suggestions for how you can regrow neurons and protect your brain.

Your brain weighs between 1,300-1,400 grams and loses approximately one neuron a second. It is possible though to regrow neurons through neurogenesis. This can help you grow about 700 neurons each day. This is important because neurogenesis can help stave off cognitive issues such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. You can regrow these neurons by choosing brain-healthy foods.

It’s important to note what doesn’t help rebuild neurons. Highly processed foods, foods that have MSG, or contain glutamate should be avoided. Instead, select foods that are fresh and are considered “clean.” That is, grown or raised without the use of chemicals or pesticides.

Some foods to consider for a healthy brain include the following:

  • Berries
  • Dark chocolate
  • Citrus apples
  • Red grapes
  • Fatty fish such as wild-caught salmon

Many of these foods, such as the berries and chocolate, contain flavonoids. Fatty fish have a high DHA fish oil content.

Interestingly, if you chew your food slowly that too can help create neurons. Other choices that you can make include intermittent fasting and calorie restriction. These can happen intermittently and the results include improved cognitive ability, the release of the hunger hormone ghrelin, and improved brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

Also, exercise will also help rebuild neurons. This is because exercise increases blood flow to your brain, which improves neuroplasticity. Working out also helps make your synapses stronger through the release of nerve growth factor. To see these benefits, Suzy Cohen recommends between 3-4 workout sessions a week lasting between 30-60 minutes.

Finally, Cohen suggests giving the hippocampal region of your brain a workout too. You can do this these ways:

Brain Games

  • playing puzzles
  • completing math problems
  • learning a new language
  • learning to read sheet music

Even playing spatial video games are okay for improving brain health!
