Healthy Foods to Eat in Moderation

These days there is always a new food that becomes trendy for a healthy diet. However, even though these foods can be good for you doesn’t mean that you should go overboard eating them.

One food that is generally considered to be healthy is smoked salmon, which is an excellent protein source. However, the smoking process creates polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These pose a cancer risk, so you should limit your intake of smoked salmon to twice a week. Healthier options to consume salmon include baked, braised, poached, and grilled.

Another fish to watch out for is tuna. Tuna is another great source of protein as well as nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc. However, tuna can also have high levels of mercury. Thus, it is recommended that you do not eat tuna every day.

A beverage that has become more widespread is kombucha. This drink has lots of probiotics and has been marketed as a healthy beverage alternative. However, it should not be consumed on a daily basis as it can cause heartburn in large quantities. It also has a lot of sugar which is bad for your teeth, and people with immune system problems might find they get sick because of the bacteria found in kombucha.

Coconut oil is another trendy health food, but there’s a caveat. It contains a high level of saturated fat and also has a lot of calories. Don’t go overboard with coconut oil and use sparingly.

Who hasn’t enjoyed a can of soup for a quick meal? The problem with canned soups vs. homemade is that they have a lot of sodium, which is bad if you have high blood pressure.  When shopping for soup look for the sodium content to choose a healthier option.

Finally, do you prefer to grill meat? Grilling causes heterocyclic amines to form, which cause cancer.  Also, charring meat can also be a cancer risk.
