How Carbamazepine Saps Nutrients

Suzy Cohen is known for her raising awareness about how medications steal nutrients your body needs. This, in turn, can cause both physical and mental health problems. Now, she wants to bring to light the effects carbamazepine can have on the body.

Carbamazepine is a prescription drug used to treat epilepsy. Basically, it works by suppressing the nerve impulses that cause a seizure. This is, of course, very important for epilepsy patients’ everyday functioning and safety.

Uses for Carbamazepine

The medication is also useful for treating the following:

  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Facial pain syndrome.

Problems with Carbamazepine

However, Cohen remarks that carbamazepine may also sap key nutrients from your body. She notes a study published in Clinical Laboratory in 2016. It shows that the drug lowers vitamin B12 and folate levels. This is important for several reasons.

For one, folate is important for growing cells and tissue development. Folate helps your body to repair strands of DNA that have become damaged too. Also, folate is used by the body to create red blood cells and iron.

In addition, when you lose folate, you gain homocysteine. This is not a good thing, as homocysteine contributes to heart attack risk. Moreover, it contributes to the condition known as “brain fog.” This makes it harder for you to think clearly and make sound decisions.

Another reason why low folate is bad for you? The nutrient is extremely important for your brain function and health. Your brain uses folate to create neurotransmitters. Folate makes hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. These are important for maintaining a healthy brain and a positive mood. Without these hormones, it becomes easier to slip into a depression.

Cohen recommends that if you take carbamazepine, consult with your healthcare provider. Don’t go on your own and supplement with natural folate, as this could raise your risk for seizures.
