First the problems: constipation, a slowing down of the digestive system, use of medications which can cause side effects, inactivity (especially bed rest after surgery), being dehydrated from the use of diuretics, diverticular disease, ulcers often caused by the use of NSAIDs to control chronic pain, mouth and esophagus problems, polyps in the colon, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Doctors suggest reviewing your medications, exercising 5 days a week, eating more fiber, drinking lots of fluids, keeping weight under control, and getting regular health checks.
