5 Ways to Feel Better

Dr. Mark Hyman notes that you can start making healthy choices, no matter the time of year. Whether it is a New Year’s resolution or you choose to start in the spring, it’s never too late to make healthier choices. He suggests these five things to start.

Eat Your Veggies

First, make sure that you are eating plenty of vegetables. Dr. Hyman says that 75% of your meal should consist of veggies. Now, you may be worried about eating too many carbohydrates. However, there is a vast difference in the quality of carbohydrates made of processed sugars and vegetables! Just make sure that the veggies you choose are non-starchy.  You can also include a few low-glycemic fruits as well.

Next, work up a sweat with high-intensity interval training. This is where you work out at your top limit for between 40-60 seconds. Then, recover for three minutes by doing a less intense exercise, such as walking. You can do this with several kinds of exercise. Try:

  • Running
  • Biking
  • Dancing
  • Swimming
  • Jump rope

Third, ensure that you are getting enough sleep each night and practicing healthy sleep habits. Avoid having a TV in the bedroom and turn off your cell phone an hour before sleep. In fact, Dr. Hyman recommends turning off all electronic devices. Also, restrict the bedroom for only sleeping or lovemaking.

Fourth, Dr. Hyman suggests practicing a 2-minute meditation both in the morning and at night. These meditation sessions are a great way to manage stress and prevent cortisol buildup.  Cortisol causes us to feel tired and can lead to illness and weight gain.

Finally, make your friends, family members, and coworkers a priority in your life.  Face-to-face human connections are important for maintaining your health. Don’t simply rely on social media to create meaningful connections with others.
